Nakagawa, Yosuke; Sukegawa, Hidetoshi; Naoi, Yosuke; Inoue, Naoko; Noro, Naoko; Okuda, Masahiro

Dai-41-Kai Nihon Kaku Busshitsu Kanri Gakkai Nenji Taikai Kaigi Rombunshu (Internet), 4 Pages, 2020/11

The physical protection exercise field, a facility equipped with various types of equipment such as sensors, cameras and fences that are used at nuclear facilities, is an effective tool for training on nuclear security at ISCN/JAEA, if it is carried out in-person. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the virtual tour of the facility is developed for the online training courses so that they could be more effective. The article explains the initial development of the virtual tour with some improvement inspired by using it on some occasions as well as a prospect of effective use of the virtual tour based on its characteristics.

Thermal and mechanical properties of CeO$$_{2}$$

Suzuki, Kiichi; Kato, Masato; Sunaoshi, Takeo*; Uno, Hiroki*; Carvajal-Nunez, U.*; Nelson, A. T.*; McClellan, K. J.*

Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 102(4), p.1994 - 2008, 2019/04

Times Cited Count:36 Percentile:90.55(Materials Science, Ceramics)

The fundamental properties of CeO$$_{2}$$ were assessed using a range of experimental techniques. The oxygen potential of CeO$$_{2}$$ was measured by the thermogravimetric technique, and a numerical fit for the oxygen potential of CeO$$_{2}$$ is derived based on defect chemistry. Mechanical properties of CeO$$_{2}$$ were obtained using sound velocity measurement, resonant ultrasound spectroscopy and nanoindentation. The obtained mechanical properties of CeO$$_{2}$$ are then used to evaluate the Debye temperature and Gruneisen constant. The heat capacity and thermal conductivity of CeO$$_{2}$$ were also calculated using the Debye temperature and the Gruneisen constant. Finally, the thermal conductivity was calculated based upon laser flash analysis measurements. This result demonstrates that the thermal conductivity has strong dependence upon material purity.

Mechanical and thermal properties of (U,Pu)O$$_{2-x}$$

Proceedings of International Conference on Fast Reactors and Related Fuel Cycles; Next Generation Nuclear Systems for Sustainable Development (FR-17) (USB Flash Drive), 6 Pages, 2017/06

Young's modulus of MOX pellets was evaluated by measuring the sound velocities of longitudinal and transverse waves in the pellets as functions of porosity, oxygen-to-metal ratio (O/M) and plutonium content. The results showed that porosity was the most important factor that 20% of the porosity decreased Young's modulus by neatly 100 GPa while O/M and plutonium content could change the Young's modulus by ~20 GPa. From the measured sound velocities, temperature dependence on Young's modulus and specific heat capacity were calculated on the Debye model by leveraging the thermal expansion data. The temperature dependence that Young's modulus decreases with increasing temperature is in good agreement with literature data. The specific heat capacity also agrees with that of calculated value by Kopp's method, taken the Schottky term and the excited term into account.

Extraction capacity of diglycolamide derivatives for Ca(II), Nd(III) and Zr(IV) from nitric acid to $$n$$-dodecane containing a solvent modifier

In order to evaluate the extraction property of the new extractants, diglycolamide(DGA) compounds, we investigated the maximum extraction of di-, tri-, and tetravalent metal ions using the system of nitric acid and n-dodecane. Limits of metal concentration (LOC) for Ca(II), Nd(III) and Zr(IV) influence strongly on HNO$$_{3}$$ and the extractant concentration. On the purpose to raise the LOC value, we employed the modifier of solvent, N,N-dihexyl-octanamide(DHOA) and DGA with the long alkyl chain, and examined. It is evident that LOC increases with DHOA concentration in n-dodecane and the length of alkyl chain attached with N atom of DGA. The stoichiometric values of LOC(Zr) estimated from the extraction reaction is obtained by using the extraction condition: tetraoctyl-DGA/ 1M DHOA+n-dodecane and 3M HNO$$_{3}$$.

Novel compounds, Diglycolamides (DGA), for extraction of various metal ions from nitric acid to n-dodecane

Sasaki, Yuji; Zhu, Z.-X.; Sugo, Yumi; Kimura, Takaumi

Proceedings of International Conference on Nuclear Energy System for Future Generation and Global Sustainability (GLOBAL 2005) (CD-ROM), 5 Pages, 2005/10

The extraction of metals by N,N,N',N'-tetraoctyl-diglycolamide (TODGA) from nitric acid to n-dodecane was investigated. From the measurement of distribution ratios, it was obvious that Ca (ionic radius: 100pm), trivalent and tetravalent ions with ionic radii of 87-113 and 83-94 pm are highly extractable by TODGA. In order to evaluate the extraction capacity in extraction solvent using DGA compounds, we measured the limits of metal concentration (LOC) for Ca(II), Nd(III) and Zr(IV). For the purpose to enhance the LOC value, we examined the modifier of solvent, N,N-dihexyl-octanamide(DHOA) and DGA with longer alkyl chain. It is evident that LOC is increased with DHOA concentration and the length of alkyl chain attached to N atom of DGA.

The detailed study of extraction capacity of diglycolamide (DGA) with and without DHOA, N,N'-dihexyloctanamide as a modifier, was performed by using the novel analytical method for the determination of the limit of metal concentration in the organic phase (LOC). The effect on modifier was studied and it is confirmed that LOC increases with DHOA concentration. It is noteworthy that LOC reaches to the stoichiometric value, which is obtained by the extraction reaction, by using 0.1M TODGA mixed with more than 0.5M DHOA into n-dodecane. Without modifier, relation of the different DGA compounds with LOC was investigated, and it is clear that LOC using N,N,N',N'-tetradodecyl-diglycolamide (TDdDGA), whose extractant can suppress the third phase, reaches to the stoichiometric value. From this work, it is obvious that the application of the condition without the third phase formation, e.g., enough concentration of modifier coexisted and DGA with long alkyl chain, is important to attain the stochiometric LOC value.

The pressure dependences of the antiferromagnetic and superconducting transition temperatures have been investigated by ac heat capacity measurement under high pressures for the heavy-fermion superconductor CePt$$_3$$Si without inversion symmetry in the tetragonal structure. The N$'e$el temperature $$T_{rm N}$$ = 2.2 K decreases with increasing pressure and becomes zero at the critical pressure $$P_{rm AF}$$ $$simeq$$ 0.6 GPa. On the other hand, the superconducting phase exists in a wider pressure region from ambient pressure to about 1.5 GPa. The pressure phase diagram of CePt$$_3$$Si is thus very unique and has never been reported before for other heavy fermion superconductors.
